    Okay, question: there is a TON of gems out there that appear octagon but are referred to as emerald cut. Even GIA references emerald cut in a shape that appears octagon. Is there a difference there or is it just an octagon replaced with the term of emerald for common understanding?

      If I saw greyish blue i'd be suspicious that it was irradiated. There is a fair amount of that material on the market, commonly called Maxixe. The colour is unstable and likely to fade (and quickly) in the presence of strong light.

    So would it just be a different oil to be able to get the RI reading for, say, diamond? If yes. Do you happen to know of what type of oil that would be? I do know that a diamond/ gem tester would likely be the go to for that type of thing but I am curious just for the sake of knowing.

      Many of the popular brands of gem microscopes (leica, olympus, motic, etc) have some models with built in cameras, or my preference is a trinocular model that you can attach a separate camera to. Do be aware that many trinocular models will require some sort of adapter if you are using a DSLR camera.

    Great advice! How to decide for each stone what market to sell to? Collectors vs jewelers? What would you base your criteria on? Just market trends va individual taste or there is some sort of common sense?

    • @GemologyforSchmucks
      @GemologyforSchmucks 20 днів тому

      I think "follow the money" is the real common sense here. If a collector offers a better price for my stone, I'd rather sell to them. If a jeweller is willing to buy more stones for an over all higher ticket/ faster selling cycle, then I prefer to sell to them. This is definitely one of those boots on the ground parts of business where you have to form relationships and find out what flows best.

    What is the bigger profit center? Is it going from rough stone to cut/finished stone, going from cut stone to jeweler maker, or buying cut and making the jewelry to sell non store front?

    • @GemologyforSchmucks
      @GemologyforSchmucks 22 дні тому

      That is a question as complex as markets themselves, and I expect the deeper truth is that the answer changes depending on how you access the chain of building value. Profit can be made and value built through so many ways, and the particular talents of the individual/ business will determine where you have the most advantage. Rough is deeply complex and is a logistics game. Jewelry requires taste, technicians and an effective marketing plan. Both can make a lot of money.

    I always cringe when I see these in action, not so much that the person getting their 'diamond' verified will be disappointed, but more so because I get the feeling that with just one slip during testing, a non-diamond stone will have a nice visible scratch across the table or crown facet and if the probe slips, requiring re-check(s), then multiple scrapes. Can this happen?

    • @GemologyforSchmucks
      @GemologyforSchmucks 26 днів тому

      They are nerve wracking to watch, certainly, but to my understanding most of the probes are copper, so the hardness isnt there to scratch most stones. That said, im sure there are brittle stones that wouldn’t appreciate that overt force.

      Good question ~ they only nibble if they're rubbing up against other stones. If they're properly taken care of, then you shouldn't really expect facet abrasion.

    This is a great inspo. I decided to play to my strengths. I'm retired and I was a graphic designer, and I am very good at color matching. From my first parcel of 7 fancy 4mm calibrated sapphires, I have two matched pinks and a trio of pinkish orange little darlings. I am going to see how many matched ones in those colors I can collect. I like the size. It's big enough for a ring stone or stud earrings. I'm a collector, not an investor. That implies selling my things at some point.

    • @GemologyforSchmucks
      @GemologyforSchmucks 20 днів тому

      I think the best investors are effective collectors. At a certain point, you need to see enough stones to understand what is worth collecting. That means that you have to sell off some of the things that you know are less rare so that you can afford the rarer items. A lot of the top gem dealers are doing just this. They sell what they can in order to not have to sell the top pieces.

  • @SnowTiger45
    @SnowTiger45 28 днів тому

    Many of the gemstones I have cut have inclusions in them. For the longest time, I could not afford better rough stones to work with. But now and then I leave the inclusions in knowing that the price per carat is reduced by people can tell that the gem is not just "glass". In fact, the gemstone has character. My pitch is that like humans, gemstones are unique and like humans, gemstones can be flawed. I think a lightly-flawed gemstone can often describe the wearer or is suitable for the wearer who is equally unique but also somewhat flawed. There is much beauty even among the flawed.

  • @LostWithoutHer
    @LostWithoutHer 28 днів тому

    I built a similar set up like this at home but I like this version better. It's so well thought out. The clear bracket serves two purposes, preventing the metal stand from tipping over or falling dramatically but also preventing overload/strain on the scale from placing a container filled with water on it. The detachable double baskets save time. It's genius enough that I'll try to replicate it with sturdy but lightweight wire. The number of spirals in each basket doesn't seem important as the baskets shown don't seem to match. (??)

  • @LostWithoutHer
    @LostWithoutHer 28 днів тому

    Hi Peter, I've often wondered, if you/we take a fine tipped magic marker/felt pen and mark a spec onto a single pavilion facet of a faceted gem and then view directly from the table and then check it also through a crown facet, will the doubly refractive gem in question more easily reveal it's nature? From a different perspective, if the marking is made onto the table facet (much easier) and the gem is viewed 'face-down' against a white background, through the pavilion would that also work with similar accuracy? Thanks in advance!

    • @GemologyforSchmucks
      @GemologyforSchmucks 20 днів тому

      This is an interesting concept and would be worth an experiment with some highly doubly refractive stones for ease of experimentation. The one caveat that i'd bring up is that we dont necessarily know where the optic axis is on a cut stone, so its possible that you'll mark the stone on the optic axis and there will be no doubling in that direction.
